Mercedes front row lockout as Russell masters Silverstone conditions

George Russell has taken a stunning pole position for the 2024 British Grand Prix, mastering the drying conditions at Silverstone in an F1 qualifying session for the ages.
The Mercedes driver produced a stunning lap in Q3 to pip teammate Lewis Hamilton to first place, with just 0.072 seconds separating the duo at the front.
It was a wet/dry qualifying session at Silverstone, with the rain only ceasing during the final minutes of Q1. The conditions caught out several drivers, including Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who crashed out at Turn 1.
As the track dried, however, Russell was in a class of his own, setting a stunning lap time of 1:27.485 to take pole position. It was his first pole position since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was unable to match Russell's pace, but he will be pleased with second place, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez.
