How to View the Solar Eclipse Safely
Old-School Low-Tech Methods
Even if you can't get your hands on eclipse glasses, there are old-school low-tech ways to savor the eclipse. Palms up, position one hand over the other at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly in a waffle pattern and allow sunlight to pass through the gaps. The tiny holes in a kitchen colander can project light from the eclipse onto a piece of paper or cardboard so that you see the effect.
Pinhole Viewers
Pinhole viewers are another popular DIY method for viewing solar eclipses safely. By poking a hole in a piece of card, you can create a simple device that projects an image of the eclipse onto a screen. To make a pinhole viewer, you will need a piece of card, a needle, and a piece of aluminum foil.
Instructions:
- Make a small hole in the center of the card with the needle.
- Cover the hole with a piece of aluminum foil.
- Poke a small hole in the center of the aluminum foil with the needle.
- Hold the card up to the sun and project the image of the eclipse onto a screen.
Please note that it is important to use a thick piece of card for your pinhole viewer. This will help to prevent the light from the sun from damaging your eyes.
